Jessie’s Story
Lots of kids who come to us are quiet, sullen, unsure of what sport they are interested in or what help they need. Jesse Leefe is not one of those children. At 12, she was very excited to meet with us and vocal about her understanding of The WaterBoy. She is a person who already values kindness and community most of all, and is very active both mentally and physically, enjoying maths and creative writing at school.
Due to her personality type, Jesse struggles a lot with boredom. Her lack of means to participate in sport has lead to frustration and the occasional fight with other kids. Jesse believes if she had the ability to play sports, she is sure she would not engage in this behaviour. She wishes to play netball and rugby league, and says she would like to take one of them to a professional level after she completes school.
Jesse’s barriers may not be anything unique, but she is a very good example of the “new normal” that is the reason for The WaterBoy’s existence. Jesse’s mum is a single parent, left to care for 4 children on a single wage. Sport, and the freedom to take her kids to sport, are just not a priority when food, shelter and other necessities have to come first. This leads to her children feeling uncared for by the world because they are missing out, and growing up resentful.
The WaterBoy wants to help Jesse as much as we can. Young people who are given a chance to grow can really internalise that they are somebody, that they matter, and take this attitude forward with them to help themselves and help others.
